"I am a detective assigned to investigate violent crimes and I have more than seventeen years experience as a police officer. When it's two-thirty in the morning and Gardner is the DA called to one of our murder scenes, we know he'll show up quickly and he'll immediately be a valuable member of our investigative team. We don't have time for "on the job training" of a prosecutor who has never worked on major crimes. Gardner is an experienced murder prosecutor and it shows in his confidence, the quality of his work, and the way junior DAs apprentice and grow under his supervision and guidance. Gardner always gets the job done right – even when it's the middle of the night, he's got to do it himself, and he's already worked a 70 hour week. I've seen him do it."
— Dan Braziel,
Police Detective, assigned to violent crimes unit
"Alex is the right person to keep Junction City and all of Lane County safe! His impeccable record, ethical standards and willingness to take on the toughest issues make him the best candidate."
— Laddie “Ken” Hancock,
Police Management
"I have always found Alex Gardner to be a top-notch guy. He is what an ideal prosecutor should be: Honest, consistent, and yet able to keep perspective and not let a case get "personal" to the point it precludes resolution of a matter. I think Alex has the force of personality to lead the office, and will do well."
— Russell Barnett III,
Defense Attorney

Welcome

"As your District Attorney, I will continue to support crime prevention, aggressively investigate and prosecute crime, assist crime victims, and enforce Oregon law fairly and consistently."

As Lane County's chief legal officer, the district attorney is responsible for enforcing Oregon law. The DA will prosecute about 7,000 cases this year, putting the most dangerous offenders behind bars to keep the public safe.

In 2008 Lane County voters will elect a new DA for the first time in 24 years. It’s an important choice. We must choose our next DA wisely.

Being an effective DA requires more than just a law degree.

We need a DA

  • who is an experienced prosecutor
  • who has earned the respect of his peers
  • who has first-hand knowledge of the job
  • with a reputation for honesty and fairness
  • who puts law enforcement ahead of politics
  • with a proven track record.

We need Alex Gardner.

Alex Gardner is Lane County’s Chief Deputy District Attorney. He’s a career prosecutor with experience running major crimes investigations and apprehending and convicting the most dangerous criminals.

When Lane County’s DA took a leave of absence in 2004, Gov. Ted Kulongoski tapped Alex Gardner to take the helm.

As DA, Gardner earned widespread praise for implementing changes that resulted in:

  • Prosecuting and convicting more criminals
  • Boosting staff morale
  • Working cooperatively with the community and improving relations among law enforcement agencies
  • Streamlining work processes for greater efficiency
  • Saving taxpayers money.

It’s time to return Alex Gardner to the #1 position in the DA’s office. Gardner knows the job, knows the community, and has what it takes to keep us safe.
